Question 7 of 21 · Product

At which level is the passport needed, for each category?

The passport can relate to the model, the production batch or the individual item. The level can differ between categories and also between products of the same category.

Possible answers

You answer for each product category you chose.

Per model

One passport per model: all products of the same model share the same data.
E.g. every chair of the "Aria" model.

Per batch

One passport per production batch, with that batch's data.
E.g. the 500 T-shirts made on 3 March from the same cotton.

Per individual item

One passport per individual item, identified by its serial number.
E.g. each electric car battery, with its state of health.

Guidance

  • Required by law

Light means of transport, electric vehicle and industrial batteries above 2 kWh: Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a passport for each individual battery (Article 77). This is an obligation, not a choice.

  • Portable and SLI batteries: the Battery Regulation does not require a passport for these categories (Article 77). Other obligations still apply, such as labelling and the QR code (Article 13).

  • Electronics: serialised products with repairs and updates during their life. The individual item level lets you record these events. Indicative, to be confirmed by the delegated act.

  • Steel, aluminium and construction materials: composition and environmental footprint vary from one heat or production batch to another, so the batch level is the most natural. Indicative, to be confirmed by the delegated act or CPR technical specifications.

  • Tyres: they are already identified by production batch and week, so the batch level is a good starting point. Indicative, to be confirmed by the delegated act.

  • Textiles and furniture: for series products with many variants you usually start at model level. Batch or individual item are needed if you want to track provenance or repairs of single pieces. Indicative, to be confirmed by the delegated act.

  • The final level is set by the product group's delegated act. If you selected several categories, the level may differ for each: the most binding advice is shown first.
